Fort Knox is an open-pit gold mine located near the city of Fairbanks, Alaska. It is mined by conventional open-pit methods, with ore processed at a mill and heap leach facility.

Fort Knox is a centre of excellence for Kinross as one of the few cold weather heap leach facilities in the world. In 2023, the site poured its nine millionth ounce of gold, more than 27 years into its mine life.

The mill has a capacity of up to 45,000 tonnes per day, with large volumes of lower grade ore and mineralized waste materials processed in the heap leach.

Kinross announced a partnership with Trout Unlimited to create the Alaska Abandoned Mine Restoration Initiative in August 2021. The Initiative's first project focused on the continued restoration of Resurrection Creek, a historic mining district in which Kinross has not operated - view the video here. In recognition of the Initiative, in 2022 Kinross Alaska received the Alaska Miners Association Environmental Stewardship Award for best management practices in environmental protection or restoration initiatives.
