Since 2003, the International Labour Organization (ILO) has recognized April 28th as ‘World Day for Safety and Health at Work’. This day serves as an opportunity to promote safe and healthy work environments globally by raising awareness of the importance of preventing occupational accidents and illnesses.
This year, Kinross Tasiast honoured this important day by hosting a one-hour ‘Safety Stand Down’ across the site to pause and reflect on our shared responsibility to keep each other safe every day.
During the event, site leadership led employees through a series of conversations surrounding the fundamental pillars of our safety culture including Safeground principles, critical risk management and the importance of the ‘stop, speak up and stand out’ mindset.
The conversations were an opportunity to have open dialogue amongst our workforce to discuss the potential risks of daily operations, best practices to avoid accidents and incidents and to communicate the powerful message that safety is not just a policy, it is the responsibility of each employee in all aspects of their daily tasks. Employees were also reminded of the importance of the ‘Right to Stop Work’, a critical tool that emphasizes knowing when to stop operations when something does not seem right, address the issue and reduce incidents.
“Hosting a site-wide Safety Stand Down is a valuable opportunity to reflect on the impact of our individual actions and the vital role we play in protecting ourselves and our colleagues,” said Mohamed Salem Soueilem, Deputy Health & Safety Manager, Tasiast. “At Tasiast, we remain committed to the key guiding principle that no job is more important than safety and that true commitment to safety means doing the right thing even when no one is watching.”
