In 2024, Kinross launched the Tasiast Fund, a community investment initiative that aims to support projects in the Inchiri and Dakhlet Nouadhibou regions focused on education and capacity-building, health, employment and agriculture. The initiative allocated US $6 per ounce of gold produced from Tasiast to support social sustainable development projects.
The Tasiast Fund’s most recent project was the construction of new school facilities and infrastructure in the Akjoujt community, reinforcing the Company’s commitment to sustainable community development and support for education in the communities surrounding the Tasiast mine.
As part of this project, Kinross Tasiast contributed US$650,000 towards the construction of a new school in Akjoujt, equipped with six classrooms, an administrative office and library, as well as 11 new classrooms across seven schools in the region – bringing the total of fully-equipped classrooms in the area to 17. In addition, Tasiast also provided 1,600 schools kits and uniforms to students valued at ~US$50,000 to ensure they have all the necessary tools, resources and attire for the start of the new school year.
A commemorative ceremony was held at the beginning of October where members of Kinross’ External Relations team met with local government officials including the Wali and President of Inchiri and the Hakem and Mayor of Akjoujt. Members in attendance from Kinross Tasiast included Baba Salihi, Vice-President, External Relations, Tasiast, Hapsatou Bal, Community Relations Manager, Tasiast, and Mahmoudy Kemal, External Relations Manager, Tasiast.
“The construction of these school facilities marks a key step in our support to the education sector,” said Baba. “Beyond building classrooms, we are creating opportunities for future generations. These initiatives reflect our commitment to inclusive, sustainable projects that are aligned with national priorities.”
Kinross Tasiast is committed to being a long-term partner in Mauritania and has allocated significant resources towards the socio-economic development of the region with a particular focus on empowering young nationals with the skills and resources needed to succeed.
