This July, the town of Red Lake, Ontario, marked 100 years since the first discovery of gold on the shores of Red Lake in Howey Bay. That discovery transformed the region into one of Canada’s richest mining districts.
Red Lake celebrated this milestone through two days dedicated to both honouring their mining history and encouraging the region’s next generation of gold miners.
Kinross Great Bear was excited to attend the Centennial Weekend which included Northwestern Ontario’s first-ever drone show, the grand opening of the Heritage Centre’s Mining Exhibit and free tours of active and historic mine sites and exploration properties.
Ian Russell, Site Manager, Great Bear, was a speaker at Centennial Weekend where he shared an overview of the Great Bear project, and the exciting future of Kinross Great Bear as a project and in the community.
“Red Lake has a unique history, of which Mining has played a strong role,” said Ian. “I have been a part of the Great Bear Project from the first core drilled and I am so proud of the work this team has done and am excited to realize the future of the Great Bear Project.”
In addition to community members, the festivities were attended by several government officials including the Minister of Northern Economic Development and Growth – George Pirie, Member of Provincial Parliament and Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Energy and Mines – Chris Scott, Red Lake Mayor – Frank Mota, and several members of council and staff from the Municipality of Red Lake.
“We saw a great turnout at the 100 years of mining celebrations in Red Lake over the two weekends in July. The event brought together employees, community members, government officials and those outside of town who wanted to learn more about the rich mining history of Red Lake.“ said Gwyneth Carlson, External Relations Manager, Great Bear. “This weekend was about celebrating the legacy of the region, how it has developed over the last century, and seeing what exciting discoveries are ahead that will continue to transform the area.”
