Cerro Casale Project – 49%, Atacama region,
Chile
Kinross acquired its 49% interest in the
Cerro Casale deposit in the Atacama region, Chile on February
28, 2007 through its acquisition of Bema Gold. Barrick Gold hold
the remaining 51% interest in Cerro Casale. The Cerro Casale
deposit, discovered in 1996, is located 145 km southeast of
Copiapo and situated south of Kinross’ Maricunga mine.
The Cerro Casale deposit is a large gold
and copper orebody with reserves (100%) of 23 million ounces of
gold and 6 billion pounds of copper and is reputedly one of the
largest undeveloped gold/copper deposits in the world.
A drill and metallurgical test program was
initiated in May 2007, and the project owners will be evaluating
metallurgical test results in early 2008.
