Toxics Release Inventory (TRI)

TRI REPORTING AT KINROSS U.S. OPERATIONS

As required, Kinross Gold Corporation submits reports for its operations under the U.S. federal environmental reporting program known as the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) of the Community Right-to-Know Act.

Because the reports made by metals mining companies - including the Kinross Gold Corporation - are significantly different from those filed by other industries, it is important to understand what's in our reports:

  • TRI is intended to provide communities with information about the amount, or weight, of listed substances that are released or managed by a company. TRI does not address risk or exposure to human health. Our mines are safely and effectively managing all TRI substances within regulatory and permit limits set to protect human health and the environment.

  • Kinross’ reported releases to air, land and water meet all regulatory and permit limits.

  • Over 99.5 percent of what we're reporting is the large volume of naturally occurring TRI-listed substances (metals) that remain in low concentrations in mined rock.

  • Although the TRI rules require us to report these naturally occurring substances that make up most of our report as “releases”, they are in fact contained in rock that is managed in engineered facilities such as stockpiles and plastic-lined pads and tailings impoundments on the mine site.

  • The remaining volume we report is from chemicals associated with the removal of gold and silver from the rock. All releases are regulated by state and federal laws to protect human health and safety and the environment.

We hope this information will help interested parties in assessing the differences between our reports and those filed by other industries.
