Community
The foundation of the
Company’s social responsibility platform is focused on the
following principles:
-
Positively contributing to
the communities where we operate through local employment
and purchasing initiatives and supporting meaningful
community development initiatives and charity projects.
-
Targeting our fundraising
support and contribution efforts to a few well-chosen areas
to maximize our programs’ effectiveness. The causes we have
chosen to target are youth and health care issues.
-
Ensuring that Kinross
acts as a “good neighbor” in every aspect of our operations.

Recent community activities

In Fairbanks Alaska, the Fort
Knox mine participates in many local events and activities such
as Golden Days, the Tanana Valley Fair, and Clean-Up Day. The
mine was recently recognized for supporting its employees who
serve in the military with the Employee Support Guard and
Reserve Award. The mine works with the University of Alaska by
participating in Engineering Week and job fairs, as well as
lending our expertise in the classroom. For many years, Fort
Knox has worked with the Alaska Mineral and Energy Resource
Education Fund (AMEREF) to teach Alaskan teachers and students
about mining and resources. As well, several members of the
management team serve on local education advisory committees.
In Republic Washington, our
Kettle River Operations established a Community Advisory Board
to facilitate stakeholder input in the planning, construction
and operation of the Buckhorn Mine. Another of our outreach
initiatives includes an Arbor Day environmental education
program, which has won the Washington Arbor Day Council Group
Project Award, the Association of Washington Business (AWB)
Environmental Excellence Award, and an AWB Certificate of
Continuous Improvement in Education.
In Paracatu, Brazil, the Morro
do Orro Mine has established a “My First Job” training program
for youth, as well as environmental education classes at the
community Ecological Center, which was established on the mine’s
property. In 2004, Paracatu was the first gold mine in Brazil to
achieve certification under SA 8000.
In Russia, Omolon Gold Mining
Company (Kinross 98.1%) supports the Omolon Foundation, which
was chartered with US$1 M in 1995. Through the foundation,
Omolon supports an expansive community outreach program
extending to Evensk, Omsukchan and Magadan. The focus of this
program is the provision of financial, logistical and
infrastructure support to these remote communities and their
surrounding populations. The Government of the Russian
Federation recognized these efforts in 2001 by designating
Omolon as a “Russian Organization of High Social Effectiveness”.
